Why Are Regular Check-Ups So Important?
Regular dental check-ups are important to keep your teeth, gums and mouth healthy. Even the most dedicated brushers and flossers cannot reach every area of their teeth and gums, which means plaque accumulates and can turn into tartar (calculus). If not treated, this tartar can cause gingivitis and lead to more serious issues, such as periodontal disease.
Regular check-ups ensure your mouth is properly cleaned and free from tartar and allow a dental professional to monitor your oral health. If a dental issue is detected, your dentist can recommend the appropriate treatment before it progresses to a more serious problem. We recommend visiting the dentist at least every 6 months.
Do I Have Gum Disease?
Gum disease can be painless, so it is important to be aware of the symptoms. One of the first symptoms is often bleeding gums. Gums become inflamed and can be tender, painful or swollen. Another common symptom is bad breath. Gums which have shrunk away from teeth or loose teeth are symptoms of more advanced gum disease.
How Do You Treat Gum Disease?
Treatment for early gum disease or Gingivitis usually involves getting a thorough scale and clean to remove plaque and tartar deposits. If plaque is not removed it can harden and become tartar (calculus) which is too stubborn to be removed with regular brushing.
For patients with advanced gum disease or Periodontitis, a deep clean is required. Deep clean helps remove plaque and tartar deposits from under the gum line. This cleaning may need to be completed over a number of appointments and may require local anaesthetic.
Tips To Care For Your Oral Health
-
Brush your teeth twice a day, using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a fluoridated toothpaste. You only need a pea-sized amount of toothpaste to get the job done.
-
Brush gently in a circular motion with the brush directed at a 45° angle to the gumline.
-
If using an electric toothbrush, guide the moving brush head slowly from tooth to tooth following the curve of the gums.
-
Replace your brush at the first sign of wear-and-tear or every three months, whichever comes first.
-
Tongue can be cleaned by gently brushing or scraping the tongue.
-
Floss once a day before brushing. You can use manual dental floss or floss holding devices.
-
Interdental brushes are useful if you have larger spaces between your teeth due to gum disease.
-
Avoid or limit the consumption of sugary food and drinks. Sugar attracts bacteria and leads to tooth decay.
