What Is A Dental Emergency?
If you experience significant dental pain, or any structural damage to your teeth, you should contact our team at Sunshine Dental for an emergency appointment.
Examples of issues that may require an emergency dental appointment include:
-
Severe pain in your teeth or gums
-
Tooth infections or abscesses
-
Fractured or cracked teeth
-
Dental trauma such as knocked out teeth
-
Wisdom teeth inflammation
-
Swelling of the face or mouth
-
Bleeding in the mouth which does not stop
-
Ulcers which do not heal
It is natural to look for pain relief remedies at home, and whilst they work as a temporary pain relief solution, they are not the long-term solution to the emergency you’re experiencing.
What Happens When You Contact Us?
Our dentists at Sunshine Dental will do their best to fit you in for same-day emergency care, and provide immediate assistance and advice on treatment. It is recommended that when you contact us, you explain your dental concern, so we can prepare for your arrival before the appointment.
Emergency Appointment- What To Expect?
The primary aim of an emergency dental appointment is to reduce or remove any discomfort you may be experiencing. During the appointment it is our priority to find the cause of pain and give you a clear plan of what needs to be done. You may find that subsequent appointments may be scheduled to follow up on your emergency procedure.
What Can I Do To Prevent Dental Emergencies?
Lowering your risk of requiring emergency dental work doesn’t guarantee that it won’t happen to you. By their very nature dental emergencies are unpredictable and can happen at any time. However, to mitigate the risk, here are some basic steps to keep your teeth in good shape:
-
Avoid using your teeth as tools to open packages, lids, sticky tape etc.
-
Wear a mouthguard while playing sports to prevent dental trauma.
-
Cut back on sugary foods and drinks to avoid cavities.
What To Do If Your Tooth Is Knocked Out?
The key is to report to your nearest dentist within the first 30 minutes and follow these instructions.
-
If the tooth is clean – place it straight back in the socket. The tooth should be gripped by the white part (crown) and not by the root. Bite down on a clean piece of soft cloth or tissue to help keep the tooth in place.
-
If the tooth is dirty – rinse the tooth with milk or if milk is not available then use tap water but only for a second or two. Do not scrub or soak the tooth. Bite down on a clean piece of soft cloth or tissue to help keep the tooth in place.
-
If the tooth can’t be put back in – keep the tooth moist by storing it in cold milk or saliva. Do not place the tooth in water.
If you can place the tooth back within 30 minutes, research shows a much higher percentage of keeping your original tooth!
If you’re worried about dental emergencies involving your children, remember that baby teeth don’t need to be saved or put back in when knocked out.
What To Do If Your Tooth Is Cracked, Chipped or Fractured?
If you find the fractured tooth fragment, take it with you to the dentist. In some cases it is possible to re-attach the fractured fragment back on the tooth. For any of these types of injuries, it is best to visit the dentist as soon as possible.
Sports injury related dental trauma is common and can be easily prevented by wearing a custom-fitted mouthguard. Wearing a mouthguard makes a big difference in contact sports and its use is encouraged even at younger ages. Contact our team at Sunshine Dental to get your custom-fitted mouthguards made.
