Why Get Root Canal Treatment Done?
It's quite common to ask, "Is it necessary to get endodontic treatment?" Or "What would happen if you leave a root canal untreated?". Your tooth cannot heal by itself. If left untreated, the infection could lead to:
-
Severe pain and swelling
-
Deterioration of the underlying bone tissue
-
Tooth loss if the treatment is delayed for too long
Root Canal Appointment- What To Expect?
-
After full anesthesia is achieved, a rubber sheet is placed over the tooth to keep it free from saliva. An opening is made on top of the tooth, the infected pulp tissue within the canals is removed and the root canals are cleaned. The canals are then filled from within and a permanent filling is placed on top.
-
If the tooth is severely infected, a medication is placed inside the tooth for one or two weeks before completing the root canal to effectively decontaminate the area. A temporary filling is used in between treatments to keep the area sterile.
-
Treatment is usually completed in 1 to 3 appointments. In most cases, once the root canal treatment is finished it is recommended to protect it with a crown to prevent fracture.
Advantage of Root Canal Treatment vs Extraction?
Root Canal Treatment saves a natural tooth and, in so doing, preserves your natural bite. Modern dentistry offers many solutions to replace lost teeth, but none of them is as desirable, in terms of both cosmetics and function, as keeping your natural tooth.
Root canals have a high success rate and are significantly less expensive than the alternative, tooth extraction and replacement with a bridge or implant.
Is Root Canal Treatment Painful?
Many people worry that a root canal will be painful, something that was true in the past. Today, with advanced anaesthesia options and techniques a root canal is as comfortable as getting a filling.
Tips For Post-Treatment Care After Root Canal Treatment
-
Avoid hot food and drinks during the first few hours till the anesthesia wears off.
-
Be mindful not to bite your lips or tongue while you are still numb.
-
Occasionally, patients experience discomfort following root canal appointment, however, over-the-counter medication is very effective in providing relief from such pain.
-
To avoid damaging a treated tooth, try not to chew or bite down on the tooth until it is fully restored.
-
It is best to stay away from hard foods as this may damage your treated tooth.
-
Remember to brush and floss daily as you normally would to keep the area clean.
